Tasmanian Institute of Critical Care has been at the forefront of postgraduate education, research and innovations in Critical Care Medicine. The Institute is committed to the delivery of high quality education and training in Intensive Care and Critical Care Anaesthesia to the rural Tasmania. Despite multiple challenges, we are determined to advance our achievements and developments into the future.

The Institute is based in Devonport,Tasmania and has been working together with Mersey Community Hospital (Mayne Health) in developing critical care services for the regional Tasmania. It has been pioneering up-to-date techniques and leading the research in critical care medicine from the North West of Tasmania. Transoesophageal Echocardiography in non-cardiac surgery and intensive care, nitric oxide therapy, differential lung ventilation, computerized renal support and other new techniques were successfully introduced for rural Tasmania for the first time with assistance of the Institute. Several focal research projects have been presented during the scientific meetings in Australia, Canada, Russia and the United States of America. Two major educational meetings have been organized by the Tasmanian Institute of Critical Care and were successfully conducted in Devonport and Latrobe.

In association with Colleagues from around the World and around Australia we conducted a Second International Scientific Meeting in Devonport in November 2002

The most outstanding professionals have been invited to present the latest developments in critical care medicine and critical care anaesthesia. Their lectures focused on controversial subjects of critical care and aimed at health care professionals involved in the care of critically ill patients. There was an invaluable opportunity for all participants to have direct interaction with the gurus of critical care from Australia and overseas. The Meeting was opened by Hon Kay Patterson, Australian Minister for Health and Ageing. The Minister presented Dr Douglas Coursin (USA) with Honorary Professorship for his major contribution to the International Postgraduate Education in Critical Care Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine. Prof Tony Bell (Tasmania), Prof Luciano Gattinoni (Italy) and Mr Neil Beer (Tasmania) also received special awards for their contributions in educational activities, research and practice of critical care medicine. 98% of the participants indicated their wish to attend such Conference in the future again. They rated the scientific content of the meeting on 1.12 (1-excellent … 5- poor)

Transoesophageal Echocardiography (TOE) has become an invaluable tool for all doctors involved in the care of the critically ill patients. Unfortunately, its use has been largely limited to cardiac surgery. Non-cardiac anaesthetists and intensivists as well as an emergency room doctors have been neglected in opportunities for training in TOE. We were delighted to offer a unique opportunity for intermediate level training course in Transoesophageal Echocardiography mostly for "non-cardiac" anaesthetists, intensivists and A&E physicians. This three days course has been based on didactic lectures, problem based learning and interactive teaching, delivered by a team of best Australian professionals. 92% of the participants indicated that they would attend such course in the future again. They rated scientific content of the meeting at 1.22 (1-excellent…5-poor).
