The Second International Conference "Critical care Controversies 2002" took place in Devonport, Tasmania on November 1-3, 2002. It attracted participants from all Australian States and Territories as well as 10 other Countries. It was opened by Hon Kay Patterson, Australian Minister for Health and Ageing. It was the most successful meeting for TICC so far with 98% of the participants indicating in survey that they would like to attend such Conference in future again. They rated scientific content on 1.12 (1-excellent, 5-poor). We are grateful for our sponsors - Mayne Health (Mersey Community Hospital), Ortho-Biotech (USA), Astra-Zeneca (USA), Lilly, Datex-Ohmeda, GE Medical Systems and Adobe Australia. The meeting was accredited for CME by College of Anaesthetists, College of Physicians, College of Surgeons and College of Emergency Medicine.

The first Tasmanian Training Course in Transoesophageal Echocardiography took place in Devonport on November 4-6, 2002. The Meeting was opened by Dr Richard Willis, President of ANZCA. Some of the best Australian professionals delivered educational sessions on theory and practice of TOE. It happened to be the biggest so far Australian TOE Course. 92% of the participants indicated their desire to attend such course in future again. They rated scientific content 1.22 (1-excellent… 5 - poor). This was a great achievement in the development of education in TOE among anaesthesia and intensive care professionals.

The first International Conference "Critical Care Controversies" has been as controversial as it sounds. For the first time in history of rural Tasmania a truly International Medical Meeting in Critical Care was launched in Devonport in November 1998. It attracted over 150 people from around the World. The most outstanding speakers from overseas and around Australia delivered the most sophisticated lectures on the range of controversial clinical, economical, nursing and ethical issues faced in critical care. For three days the participants from nine nations had a unique opportunity of close interaction with gurus of intensive care and critical care anaesthesia. A busy trade exhibition allowed 18 Companies to display and discuss their latest products. It attracted as much attention of the participants as a Conference itself. The Institute is ever grateful for the Sponsorship of the Conference to: Health Care of Australia, ANZ Bank and Frank Russell Group, Traveland, Becton-Dickinson, ICI Pharmaceuticals, Radiometer Copenhagen and Alliance Pharmaceuticals. Without their tremendous support such a great venue would never be possible. The Conference was accredited for the Maintenance of Professional Standards by four professional Australian Medical Colleges.

The second Conference organized by the Tasmanian Institute of Critical Care took place in Latrobe, Tasmania in December 2000. It was entitled "Ischaemic Heart Disease from A to Z" and indeed it has delivered accordingly. A group of the most outstanding professionals from Melbourne has delivered brilliant lectures on prevention, diagnosis and management of acute and chronic coronary insufficiency. The pathway of the patients from the general practitioner, to the interventional cardiologist, to the cardiac anaesthetist, to cardiac surgeon and back to the general practitioner has been followed by interactive session with the participants.
